This is the first official week of my 2017 summer DREU internship. I just graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science a couple of weeks ago. While undergoing the job search, I have been given the opportunity to work with Dr. Moses for the summer. Her research involves studying complex biological and information systems in terms of emergent behaviors, scaling, growth, and communication. Dr. Moses is also PI for the NASA Swarmathon. The Swarmathon is a national competition in which students from Minority-Serving Institutions write algorithms to enable robots to effectively collect resources. The work of these students may eventually extend to assist robots in space exploration. More info can be found here : http://nasaswarmathon.com/about/
I'm starting a couple of weeks earlier than the other REU students. Also many people are out for vacation until June. My official project won't be finalized for a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I'm working with Jarrett who is developing the base code for this year's Swarmathon competition. This week has been spent shadowing him. He's introduced me to ROS, showed me how to install the relevant software, and explained how the robots network. I've also been familiarizing myself with how the code related to the robot movement works. Dr. Moses has also given me two papers to read. Besides this, I've been busy with administrative things such as getting keys, DREU paperwork, etc. The lab is involved in a lot of cool things. I'm excited to be a part of their work. I'm also excited to meet the other REU students.
